♪ [music] ♪ We’re studying Alzheimer’s disease and
particularly infection in Alzheimer’s disease, specifically
in the older population. What we have found is actually novel,
and that is a particular type of infection of respiratory pathogen,
called Chlamydia pneumoniae, that has been found in
Alzheimer brain tissues. Because we found it in these tissues,
we believe that it can actually trigger the changes in brain. Part of the triggering in brain,
we think is actually neuroinflammation. Neuroinflammation has been long thought as
a process involved in Alzheimer’s disease and nerve cell damage. Well, my original interest in Alzheimer’s
disease came about by studying the blood-brain barrier when
I was in grad school. And then, I also had an uncle who
developed the disease. We think that the generation of pathology
due to the infection can actually drive the process of disease,
and eventual accumulation of plaques and tangles that are the definition of what
occurs as an endpoint in Alzheimer’s disease. ♪ [music] ♪
